John M. Hensley served as the sheriff of Fresno County from 1876 to 1893, living a life full of adventure as a pioneer lawman. He pursued infamous criminals such as the Dalton gang, train robbers Sontag and Evans, and numerous other outlaws and desperadoes. In 1972, the construction of Hidden Dam on the Fresno River created a lake that provided a chance to honor the Hensley family, and it is now known as Hensley Lake. Each year hundreds of visitors find recreation at Hensley Lake, many not knowing that beneath those waters behind Hidden Dam lies the playground of John M. Hensley, the baddest lawman of Fresno County.
The trails at Hensley Lake are among the most challenging running routes in Madera County. As you navigate the trail, you’ll encounter steep hills to hike and large rock to climb. Along the trail you’ll also gain some stunning views of Hensley Lake.
