Marathon Training: What I Wish I Knew Before My First Race
General
Running a marathon is a bucket-list goal for many—but training for one is a journey unlike any other. I still remember the moment I clicked "register" for my first marathon. A mix of excitement, fear, and 1,000 questions instantly flooded my brain. I’d read the training plans and bought the gear, but I had no idea how much I didn’t know.
So, whether you’re gearing up for your first 26.2 or thinking about taking the leap, here’s what I wish someone had told me before I trained for my first marathon.
🗓️ 1. The Long Runs Are Non-Negotiable
Your long runs aren’t just about logging miles—they’re about preparing your mind and body for what it feels like to keep going when you’re tired. I skipped a few early on and paid the price on race day.
What I wish I knew:
• Long runs teach pacing, nutrition timing, and mental endurance.
• Start slow and aim to finish strong.
• Run them at a conversational pace—these aren’t speed sessions!
🍌 2. Fueling Is a Science (And an Art)
Around mile 16, I hit what runners call “the wall.” My energy vanished, my legs felt like concrete, and I was completely confused—until I realized I hadn’t eaten enough.
What I wish I knew:
• Start fueling early (around 45 minutes into your long run).
• Use gels, chews, or real food you’ve practiced with.
• Hydration and electrolytes matter, especially in heat.
🥴 3. You Will Get Tired of Running Sometimes—And That’s Okay
There were days when I just didn’t feel like running. Or my legs felt like they belonged to someone else. That’s normal.
What I wish I knew:
• Not every run feels good—and that’s part of the process.
• Listen to your body. Missing one run won't derail your race.
• Incorporate “cutback weeks” where mileage dips to help you recover.
🧦 4. Gear Can Make (or Break) Your Race
Blisters, chafing, or wearing the wrong socks may seem minor—until you’re several hours into your run. I learned the hard way.
What I wish I knew:
• Don’t try anything new on race day—test gear during training.
• Invest in good socks, anti-chafe balm, and a well-fitted hydration belt.
• Choose shoes based on comfort, not just trend.
🧠 5. Mental Strength Is as Important as Physical Training
Marathon day is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. There were moments I questioned everything—especially between miles 18–23.
What I wish I knew:
• Practice mental strategies: mantras, visualization, and positive self-talk.
• Break the race into segments (5Ks or landmarks).
• Remind yourself why you started.
🕒 6. Race Day Starts Long Before the Start Line
From bathroom logistics to what you eat the night before, marathon morning is a process.
What I wish I knew:
• Lay everything out the night before.
• Get to the start early—don’t underestimate port-a-potty lines!
• Stick to familiar food and hydrate well (but not excessively).
🏁 7. Crossing the Finish Line Is a Feeling Like No Other
Despite the pain, doubts, and long months of training, finishing my first marathon was unforgettable. I cried. I smiled. I questioned my sanity. Then I signed up for another.
What I wish I knew:
• The journey is the reward—race day is the celebration.
• Recovery takes time—respect it.
• You’re capable of more than you think.
Final Thoughts
Training for a marathon is one of the hardest—and most empowering—things you can do. There will be highs, lows, and lessons in every mile. But when you cross that finish line, everything will make sense.
If you’re about to train for your first marathon, know this: you’ve got this. Take it one step, one run, one week at a time.
And don’t forget to enjoy the journey—it’s one you’ll never forget.
