One of a number of half marathon races staged in the state’s northeastern corner for the first time in 2010 (as well as other distances), the Prairie State Half Marathon & 10K makes its 12th annual running in the fall of 2022.
The race unfolds along an out-and-back course that starts and finishes just outside Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve, a gorgeous 1,100-acre park filled with rolling prairies, open green spaces, and forested woodlands filled with miles of hiking trails.
Runners start the out-and-back course for the race along Robert Parker Coffin Road, and from there head north to Cuba Road, where they’ll run a long out-and-back stretch.
Next, they’ll head south into the neighborhoods within Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve, before heading back north to Robert Parker Coffin Road for the race finish.
The race organizers describe the course as largely flat throughout the half marathon’s 13.1 miles, owing in large part to its location along bodies of water like the park’s lakes and riverbanks, though runners can expect some mild changes in elevation here and there along the race route.
Organizers note the field size for the race is limited — to 1,000 entrants for half marathon. The course for the race will be USATF-certified.
A virtual option is available for the 2020 event, to be run between October 1 and October 3. You’ll keep track of your own time, and your shirt and medal will be mailed to your door after the race.
